How much does a digital marketing agency cost per month?

By The KOPER ONE team Updated on 2 min read

A digital marketing agency typically charges a management fee of 1,200 to 3,500 euros per month for a small or mid-sized business, rising toward 8,000 euros for full-service work. This fee is separate from the ad budget paid to Google and Meta. The final price depends on channels, industry competitiveness and scope.

The fee pays for strategy and the team's work; the media budget goes straight to the platforms. They are two different costs, and mixing them up is the most common buyer mistake.

What's the difference between the agency fee and the ad budget?

They are two completely different things:

  • Management fee: what you pay the agency for the work — strategy, campaign build and optimization, creative, landing pages, reporting and meetings.
  • Ad budget: the money that goes straight to Google and Meta to buy clicks and impressions.

The agency does not keep the media budget. If someone quotes both as a single number, ask them to split it before you sign.

How much should I spend on ads per month to see results?

It depends on your industry and how competitive the auction is, but a small business usually needs at least a few thousand euros a month in media, kept separate from the fee, to gather reliable data. A budget that is too small never produces enough conversions for the algorithm to learn and optimize. The right number comes out of a diagnosis based on your average order value, margin and revenue goal, not a generic guess.

Is it worth hiring an agency or a freelancer?

It depends on how mature your operation is. A freelancer usually costs less and works well for a simple, single-channel setup. An agency brings more hands and more roles — strategy, creative, landing pages, data and continuity when someone is on holiday.

The real question is not "which is cheaper", but how much actual monthly work your account needs and who can deliver it with consistency.

What does a marketing retainer actually include?

A real retainer is not just "managing the ads". It typically covers:

  • Strategy and account planning.
  • Campaign build and ongoing optimization.
  • Creative production and testing.
  • Landing pages and conversion work.
  • Reporting and regular meetings.

If a quote is suspiciously cheap, something on this list is missing. Ask exactly what is included before comparing prices.

Does an agency charge a flat fee or a percentage of ad spend?

Both models exist:

  • Flat retainer: a predictable monthly fee, regardless of how much you spend on media. Good for stable budgeting.
  • Percentage of spend: usually between 15% and 25% of the ad budget. The cost scales up with your media.
